What NEP 2020 says
AI is a skill for every student.
The National Education Policy 2020 recognises artificial intelligence as one of the technologies reshaping how we live and work. It calls on schools to build digital literacy, computational thinking and an awareness of emerging technologies like AI, so that every student is prepared for a fast-changing world.
In other words, AI is treated as a skill all students should understand, not a specialist topic for a few.
The Class 3 rollout
AI is becoming part of school from Class 3.
Building on NEP 2020 and the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE 2023), the Ministry of Education is introducing AI and computational thinking in schools from Class 3, starting with the 2026 to 27 academic year.
AI is being treated as a basic, universal skill that every child begins to learn early, rather than an optional add-on later.

In line with NEP 2020, CBSE offers Artificial Intelligence as a subject: code 417 for Classes 9 and 10, and code 843 for Classes 11 and 12. ICSE and several State boards are adding AI as well. HAILM complements these subjects with free, hands-on learning.
For teachers
NEP 2020 puts teachers at the centre.
To teach and guide students on AI, teachers need practical training and support. National efforts such as NISHTHA and SOAR are building this capacity, and HAILM offers free, certified AI training for teachers in English and Hindi, more Indian languages to be added in future.
